To talk or not to talk during massage

Posted by: mamamassage on: October 1, 2008

Believe it or not I’ve had many clients of mine over the years ask me about talking during a massage therapy session.  Well there are no hard fast rules about this, there are a few things to consider.  Here are my personal thoughts on the subject.  I prefer that talking be minimal, for the following reasons, 1) I as the therapist feel that the client will get more out of the session if they are able to relax and sort of “get into the zone” 2) I feel that I concentrate better on the massage when I’m not having to carry on a conversation.  However, I’ve had many clients that seem to need to talk it actually helps them relax if they can vent about something or talk about work, home, kids etc.  Although, as a Massage therapist, you must refrain from giving advise to anyone since that is not within your scope of practice.  Just listening and offering support is usually all that is needed.  So, in conclusion if you feel the need to talk during your massage session then do so.  But like I said, I believe that you will get more relaxed and feel better if you allow yourself to “get into the zone” and forget about everything for an hour!
